I volunteered as a chaperone for their Glow in the Dark Dance at my practicum school placement!

Video: Myself and another TC at REMSS got a go at the 360° photo booth to test run it before the students arrived!

The dance was organized primarily by the LINK Crew Leaders, who were Grade 11 and 12 students, and then supervised by their Leadership teachers. When the call went out for volunteer chaperones, I happily signed up, as I remember my high school dances as some of the highlights of my high school experience.

I participated in the glow-in-the-dark theme by wearing white, as instructed by the LINK crew students. It was awesome to see students get into the theme, wearing some crazy colours and outfits to glow in the dark. It was also funny to see some students dressed to the nines, and others dressed in sweatpants; the duality of what it is to be 14 years old was really on display!

As a chaperone, I monitored the Upper Gallery, ensuring students stayed in the designated area. This was also a great opportunity to network with administrators and other faculty members, and I gained some valuable insights into how to continue integrating myself into the school and district communities.

The students had a lot of fun, and the teachers who organized the dance with the LINK Crew Leaders appreciated the volunteer chaperones. I look forward to continuing to get involved in school and district events to support students' overall school experiences.

Teaching is like having a superpower, but with more grading and less spandex.
