My Self-Assessment:
I think my Concept-Based Teaching assignment clearly states how it applies to the BC curriculum and how students would accomplish the core competencies with the lesson material by being critical thinkers. I would also challenge myself to go beyond the classroom in this aspect and ask my students how these concepts can be applied to personal and/or global experiences outside of the classroom. For example, how does comedic disposition affect how we perceive information through traditional and digitized media? Do we assign more value to one or the other, and is that value affected either positively or negatively by comedy?
For the creative thinking aspect of my Concept-Based Teaching assignment, I think that I bridged the gap between English and other disciplines with innovative ideas and concepts. I would be eager to collaborate with other teachers with different teachable subjects than my own, and hear their ideas as to how we bridge the gap between subjects. I especially think that the bridge between arts and STEM is one that needs to be explicitly collaborative between teachers, to have the most effective learning outcomes achieved.
I think the area I can improve the most upon is the transfer of my principle generalization. I used English specific terms like “literary tropes”, which doesn’t lend itself well to transferring to other subjects. So, I think working on being concise and purposeful with my language when constructing principle generalizations will help them to be more transferable when looking at interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
